Based on a true story

You know those kooky family movies that start out with the words “based on a true story” appearing on the screen?
Have you ever watched one and thought to yourself, ‘Oh yeah right. That wouldn’t happen….That wouldn’t either!’ [a la the frog vs. dinner table scene in Cheaper By the Dozen]?

I used to do that all the time.
Then I married my husband.

Our life is made up of those scenes.

We were awakened around 1 A.M. Saturday morning by mosquitoes – lots of them.
We killed at least 60 before I lost count. [Picture me in my pajamas, beating the walls and then wiping off the nasty mosquito goo with a damp, pink dish towel.]
Our mosquito massacre woke up The Boy.
He wanted to play and fought sleep.
Mosquitoes bit us all.
By noon on Saturday, we were at Lowe’s purchasing fogger for our garage.
Our garage is now eerily quiet.

Last Wednesday we found out that our first nephew would be arriving on 08/09/10 . Original plan: go to Missouri next weekend.
By Thursday evening, Steven had decided he should make the trip this weekend, alone, leaving Sunday afternoon and driving back Monday night. I wanted to go, but I also understood the trip would be easier for him without a pregnant, car-sickness prone wife and 8-month old son tagging along. I have to admit too, the thought of a 4 1/2 hour drive, turned 6 hour drive with a baby, didn’t sound fun.

Sunday morning we woke up to a bit of an ‘off’ morning. I was having some bad pregnancy sickness, at least bad compared to what I’m used to.
We managed to make it to church on time. I sat out on singing – didn’t figure puking on stage would be good.
We wrangled the toddler class, and that afternoon, had my parents, sister, and brother-in-law over for lunch.
After lunch, my parents offered to take The Boy to their house to allow Steven a chance to nap before his long drive and because they were already planning to babysit him that evening while I worked.

All was well. We decided we both needed a nap.
Fast forward two hours.

We woke up to discover our air conditioner was malfunctioning. It was leaking condensation.
Did I mention it was 95+ degrees outside?
Steven cleaned out the vents, and we thought the problem was solved.
He left. I left.
I returned home at about 10 p.m. to realize it wasn’t fixed.
My parents came out to our house, and my dad declared it unfixable for the evening. The line probably needed to be blown out, and for some reason the joint was glued on.
I packed up myself, my son, and two dogs and moved to my parents’ house for the evening.
Today a nice man came and fixed my AC.
I returned home tonight.
I pulled into the garage and noticed in the reflection on our storm door that my car had a headlight out. Yay. Fixable though.
I unloaded the car.
My sleeping son woke up.
I gave him a snack, and all was well.

My mom called and informed me I had left the formula container at her house. Thankfully I had a bit still in the diaper bag.

I started getting ready to put The Boy to bed, and Steven called.
He informed me that he was on his way home, but he needed my debit card number to pay for his gas. He had dropped his wallet in his mother’s car.
Tomorrow will be spent getting him a new license and debit cards, and his mom is going to mail his wallet to him.

I wonder what the rest of the week holds?

As I was writing this post, I  am reminded of a few things.

  • A conversation my husband and I had as we were leaving the movie theater after seeing Cheaper by the Dozen. He asked, “You wish our family could be like that, don’t you?” and I nodded. Well, so far we have 1 1/2 kids, 2 1/2 years of marriage, and lots of craziness in our book.
  • The old saying, “Be careful what you wish for.”

I wouldn’t trade this wish though. It’s a fun ride.
